Did you know that March is Women's History month? Crafts were originally born out of necesity and considered "Womens" work. (Unlike today where everything is considered "womens" work). Women wove cloth, spun yarn, sewed clothing and other household goods. When the industrial revolution happened, machinery was created to mass produce many of the items that used to be hand made. This made a change in the traditional role of the woman and hand crafted items, moving the items from a necessity to a leisure activity.  Crafts have seen rises and falls in popularity , depending on the state of the economy and world events of the times. In the 1950's, do it yourself projects weree the rage. In the 1970's, we wanted to macrame the world. Decorative painting and the start of scrap booking became popular. Through the years quilting has adapted to the tastes of the times and has been flexable enough to grow and change with the times. Quilts will always have a place in time and history.
